AMIG@S, peço encarecidamente para CADA UM/UMA de vocês ASSISTIR, VOTAR, e se quiser, COMENTAR este meu documentário que está participando do festival internacional online "We Speak, here", no Portal "Culture Unplugged". Nos próximos dias postarei mais, não se aborreçam (!) e desde já peço gentilmente para divulgar através dos respectivos canais e contatos. E mais, não vejam nisso um "o cara tá se achando!", pois não tenho nada para me achar, só tenho a melhorar e muito (inclusive trata-se de um meu filme de 2008, tanto para mudar, produzido e dirigido sem patrocínio ou apóio financeiro). Vejam, isso sim, que "o cara tá desprovido de assesor de imprensa (!!!)", pois vou ter que me virar eu mesmo pelo Facebook e redes sociais, confiando no apoio e no carinho d@s amig@s. Concluindo, "Bons auspícios, amor que engorda" é um documentário de curta-metragem (15 mins) que realizei em 2008 na Maternidade ISEA (CG), sobre doação de leite humano, e cujas protagonistas são 3 mulheres: uma técnica de laboratório, uma moça gravida que por sinal deu à luz durante as gravações do documentário, e uma doadora de leite humano. A linda trilha sonora é da artista paraibana SOCORRO LIRA. Basicamente é isso, obrigado por curtir e repassar. Paz e amor para tod@s.

L'essere umano e la natura sono in eterno conflitto, in bilico tra amore e odio. Amore per la bellezza che il mondo sa regalare, odio per come essa viene bistrattata dall'uomo. Amore che sa dare la natura, accogliendo l'uomo, e bistrattandolo e anche uccidendolo se necessario per proteggere sé stessa.

Negli anni Settanta dei ricercatori anonimi, forse tedeschi o americani, costruirono dei tunnel per rubare uranio per i loro studi su una (possibile?) nuova bomba nucleare.

Ma la natura si ribella, ed ecco che la natura punisce facendo ammalare di cancro i residenti.

Once Upon A Time An Atomic Bomb indaga in che modo il male insito nella mano dell'essere umano, possa minare lo splendore dell'ambiente in nome della scienza.

Il documentario di Riccardo Migliore offre lo spettacolo di paesaggi (apparentemente) incontaminati, che in realtà nascondono l'incubo di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, il male nascosto che si manifesta sotto forma di una cellula tumorale.

Il regista si sofferma con campi lunghi sulla bellezza di questi posti, e l'ottimo utilizzo della fotografia ne esalta lo splendore, con panorami mozzafiato, tramonti, alberi, la terra, che fa da splendida cornice e allo stesso tempo da contrasto alle drammatiche testimonianze di chi ha perso la madre o il padre per colpa di questa "ricerca".

Se dal punto di vista narrativo è ineccepibile, dal punto di vista tecnico è lievemente carente, dovuto alla scarsità di budget, finendo per influire inevitabilmente sulla tecnica, specialmente nelle carrellate, poco fluide, mentre i campi lunghi sono perfetti, ma nel complesso è un'opera ben diretta e soprattutto interessante, che ci fa venire in mente quanti errori ha commesso l'uomo nel corso degli anni, e quanti errori continua a fare a danno del magnifico paese che ci ospita: il mondo.

8 Nominees selected for 2012 Uranium Film Festival Award

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, (May, 01, 2012) -  The 2nd International Uranium Film Festival has nominated eight films representing eight countries for its Award, the Yellow Oscar, in three categories: Best Short, Best Feature and Best Animation. The Festival starts 6 days after the next Earth Summit (Rio plus 20) in the Cinema of the famous Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro called MAM. Between June 28th until July 13th, the Uranium Film Festival will screen over 50 films from all continents about atomic bombs, nuclear energy, uranium mining and radioactive dangers. The film festival will culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday, July 14th at the same location.

ABOUT THE URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL

The Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro is organized by the Yellow Archives. The festival wants to stimulate the production of independent documentaries, movies and animated films about any nuclear issue. By awarding the Yellow Oscar, the Festival intends to support independent "nuclear" filmmakers to continue with their work and to give them more visibility.

The Yellow Archives, the presenting organization of the Uranium Film Festival, is a charitable cultural and educational organization dedicated to document and to raise global awareness about threatened cultures and peoples through the art of film and the moving image, and it is the first-ever film library in Latin America dedicated to films about the whole nuclear fuel chain and radioactivity. Brazil’s Chernobyl happened September 1987 in the city of Goiânia. Two scrap metal dealers found an old radiotherapy unit in an abandoned cancer hospital and opened it. Hundreds of people became victims of highly radioactive Cesium-137. The Yellow Archives produced a photo exhibition about it: “Hands of Cesium". Read more

Caesium 137: The nightmare of Goiânia

In the ruins of a demolished hospital for cancer treatment in the centre of the Brazilian city Goiânia, two young men found an old "forgotten" Teletherapy Unit, which contained a highly radioactive "Caesium 137 bomb". They sold it to a local scrap metal dealer, who opened that Pandora's box. People were fascinated by the dazzling blue light of the caesium crystals. But they did not know, that it was the shine of the death. Hundreds if not thousands of the citizens and visitors of Goiânia became victims of Caesium 137. The script of the movie is based on statements by the victims and medical personal attending the victims, taken by Roberto Pires at the time of the accident.

The Secret and the Sacred. Two Worlds at Los Alamos.
Hidden in the mountains of Northern New Mexico lies the birthplace of the Atomic Age: Los Alamos, home of the "Manhattan Project". Here Robert J. Oppenheimer and his staff created the first atomic bomb, "Trinity", the scientific prototype to "Little Boy" and "Fat Man," the bombs which hastened the end of World War II by leveling Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although the laboratory is today also a leading center of genetic research, it remains a place of secrecy, for its main mission is to maintain the existing nuclear arsenal - a task that hides behind the name, "Stockpile Stewardship". The secret meets the sacred upon the mesa of Los Alamos. The lab takes up forty-three square miles - indigenous land of the Tewa people from the pueblos Santa Clara and San Ildefonso. The local Indians are cut off from their traditional shrines of worship: their prayer sites are either fenced off or contaminated. One of the sacred places contains the petroglyph of Avanyu, the mythic serpent that is the guardian of the springs. The Avanyu petroglyph was created long before the first White man set foot on the continent. According to tribal wisdom, those who poison the water must face Avanyu's fiery revenge. The local ground water has been contaminated by decades of the laboratory's uncaring. Warnings from the pueblos' spiritual leaders to laboratory officials fell upon deaf ears. At the laboratory, formulas pull rank on myths.

Once upon a Time in the Atomic City

In Pocinhos (Paraíba, Brazil), approximately fifty years ago, some unidentified US citizens began to appear frequently, leading a scientific research in anonymity. The small semi-arid city of Paraiba, today, has a high rate of cancer. Brazilian scholars, in the 70's and 80's, made scientific investigations in loco, confirming the presence of Uranium in Pocinho's subsoil.
In this documentary, the inhabitants talk about the situation, as some of them witnessed the Uranium extraction process and its measurement with a scientific equipment. They express their opinions or even take a chance to protest against the silence that still deny, to local population, any information that could eventually clarify the facts and, above all, the relation between Uranium and cancer.

Maralinga Pieces

Between 1952 and 1963 the British Government performed highly secretive nuclear weapons tests at Maralinga and Emu Field in South Australia and on the Monte Bello Islands off the coast of Western Australia. A total of twelve major nuclear tests were performed, and up to 700 minor 'dirty' trials were also conducted. The area was massively contaminated with radioactive materials and cleanups were attempted in 1967 and 2000. However, examinations after these cleanups found that many of these sites still remain radioactive. Shot on location at Maralinga in 2011, this short film takes the viewer through a cinemagraphic landscape of the places these bombs were exploded, as well as extracts snippets of memories of Aboriginal elders and Australian nuclear veterans, whose lives have been deeply impacted by these tests.

Jadugoda the black magic

Jadugoda is an area in the state of Bihar populated by Adivasi (tribal peoples of India). It first came into prominence when uranium deposits were discovered in the area, since Jadugoda is India's only underground uranium mine. The film documents the devastating effects of uranium mining by Uranium Corporation of India Limited in Jadugoda. For the last thirty years, the radioactive wastes have been just dumped into the rice fields of the Adivasis.

Uranium - is it a country? Tracking the origins of nuclear power

Where does nuclear energy come from? This documentary takes a look at the footprints of nuclear energy. The Olympic Dam uranium mine in Australia is run by the multinational corporation BHP Billiton. Uranium mining is very lucrative and the demand for it is booming. The spokesperson for the Australian Uranium Association talks of a bright future. He claims that Australia has the potential for 15 to 20 new uranium mines. An indigenous resident speaks of the impact the mine has on the environment in which he lives. On the other side of the world, nuclear energy is a subject of debate. A french researcher measures radiation from nuclear sites and uranium transportation. In Germany the state secretary for the ministry of the environment points out that nuclear energy is not suited to stop climate change.

"Sacred Poison" is a 30-minute documentary that brings viewers into the pain and devastation that uranium mining brought into the lives of too many Navajo. It is a moving documentary whose power is in the voices and the people that we meet. It is raw and intimate, and I use what I learned from years of reporting, my journalism, to bring their stories to life. The usually reserved Navajo reveal the pain and struggle of living life where the amount of clean water you have to drink is very limited, where one family lost seven children to uranium contamination, where various forms of cancer seem to live inside so many neighbors.

Uranium: a poisoned legacy

A shocking investigation into uranium mining in Africa. We visit three areas affected by the uranium industry; Mounana where activity has now ceased, Arlit, where the mines have been active for 40 years, and Imouraren, a future site. In spite of the horrific damage to local populations at previous sites, another mine is being constructed, in Imouraren. The result of a colossal deal between the governments of France and Niger, this will be their biggest open mine yet. Areva claims that the new mine will not poison the land, but local people are sceptical.

Uranium Mining - Not in Nisa (Urânio em Nisa Não)

Portugal has 100 Year long history of Uranium Mining. Also Uranium of Portugal was used to make the first nuclear bombs. Now Portugal´s last big uranium deposite is situated close to Nisa, a beautiful village in the north of Alentejo. In an act of prevention, citizens demonstrated against any uranium mining development. They decided to prefer a sustainable production of local products like chease and olive oil than jobs in the uranium industry.

Eight thousand people once lived in and around Uranium City, Sask., in the northwest corner of the province. Founded as a tent outpost in the early 1950s when uranium was discovered nearby, it grew into a thriving community with dozens of mining ventures as well as hotels, apartment blocks, a movie theatre, a hospital and CANDU High School. In the mid-1960s, however, the United States government stopped purchasing Canadian
uranium, and the bottom began to fall out of both the market and the city. When the last mine closed in 1982, the exodus began.

Inspired by a dream of nuclear waste as a malignant tumour in the earths skin a woman journalist sets off on a road trip. She follows the route taken by the trucks carrying nuclear waste from the nuclear power plant in Cape Town to their destination in the pristine semi-desert region of Namaqualand. There she meets men and women of the Nama-Khoi tribe, who live in the area, and listens to their untold stories. Over 8 years, her investigation leads her to the homes of other communities living and working in close proximity to nuclear facilities - from nuclear fuel manufacturing plants to nuclear waste dumps and future nuclear power plant sites. Buried in Earthskin subtly demonstrates how energy and political power go hand in hand, and gives a voice to marginalized indigenous peoples who have paid the ultimate price for decisions made (about where we get our electric power) for the sake of political and financial power.

Not for Public Release: a Nuclear Incident in Lock Haven

For much of the twentieth century the United States Department of Defense was a major producer of radioactive waste. The Pentagon not only produced its own nuclear waste. For years, the Pentagon depended on an unknown number of private defense contractors to supply countless radioactive parts and equipment. In the mid-twentieth century, the U.S. government actually gave some of these defense contractors permission to dump radioactive waste on their private properties. The Pentagon seldom, if ever, disclosed the whereabouts of these dangerous nuclear dumps. The problem becomes one for the ages: many of these radioactive isotopes remain dangerous and "hot" for thousands of years, even as the radiation is invisible to unsuspecting victims. This carelessness caught up with college students in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. One day the students woke up to find environmental officials dressed in protective "moonsuits" searching their apartment building for tell-tale signs of radioactive waste.

From 1951 to 2005 at least 13,000 tonnes of uranium have been proposed on German fields. Phosphate fertilizers were dirtied with an average of half a pound of uranium per tonne. The confederation of industries agrarian and the farm association do not take a serious view on that. The natural uranium deposits in our grounds are much higher, than the additional load by the fertilization. Besides, they hide that the so-called "natural uranium" is already integrated since millenniums firmly in the crystalline structures of the rock, the uranium from the fertilizer, however, is very slightly water-disolvable and movable and can reach very fast in the drinking water leaders. In an exciting trace search author Dethlev Cordts is looking for the springs of the uranium coming along in the drinking water.

It premiered at the Sydney and Brisbane International Film Festivals. To Whom It May Concern

"To Whom It May Concern" is a record of broken people's lives in Belarus five years after the Chernobyl power plant explosion. It shows the plight of children and their parents who have been eating low level radiation food. It is an attempt to warn the rest of humanity to the danger of being exposed not only to radiation but to the undisclosed truth. The film was produced 5 years after the Chernobyl nuclear explosion happened. Becoming sick as a result of exposure to the low dose radation for 5 years, and fearing for the health of her then 7 year old son, director/ producer Galina Sanderson decided to attract international attention to the situation in Belarus. The State run media was not allowed (and still is not) to reveal any factual health related information or sócio-psychological effects of the accident, and the director/producer had to quit her position in Belorussian State TV in order to make this film.

25 years after the biggest nuclear accident in history, wolves reign the radio-actively contaminated no-man's-land, the so-called exclusion zone, of Chernobyl, which stretches from Ukraine into Belarus and Russia. After the explosion of the Chernobyl reactor on April 26, 1986, one city and some 150 villages were evacuated. About 340.000 people were displaced. Uninhibited by the presence of humans, a profusion of wild species has since taken over a territory of about 3.000 square kilometers, creating a new wilderness. At the top of this eco-system is the wolf. Rumors about wolves in the zone have been numerous, but hard facts are still rare. Curious about these rumors, Christoph and Barbara Promberger, carnivore experts from Germany and Austria who have conducted wolf studies around the world visited the zone in 2009 to get a personal impression. They were overwhelmed by the obviously numerous presence of wolves in what has been called the Chernobyl Jungle and is officially the Polessie Radio-Active Reserve.

This fuel reprocessing plant is for recycling nuclear power by removing plutonium from used nuclear power fuel. This film shows the various lives of the people that live in Rokkashomura and how they are living with the new nuclear reprocessing plant. A lady in the village pursues her activism in order to stop the reprocessing plant. She grows tulips to help raise awareness of what Rokkashomura still has to offer. She even held a farmers market and told each customer "these maybe the last organic plants you can buy without any radiation". This fuel reprocessing plant has divided Rokkashomura into people for and against the building and usage of the plant.

Uranium mining was imposed on the Traditional Owners of Kakadu, Australia in the late 1970s and the controversial Ranger mine commenced production in 1981.
Three decades later Kakadu uranium is still shipped out of Darwin to fuel nuclear reactors in Japan, Europe and elsewhere.
The film includes rare footage of Mirarr Senior Traditional Owner Toby Gangale stating clear opposition to mining on his country and documents his prescient concerns about uranium. It shows how the Federal Government overrode the human rights of Kakadu's Traditional Owners in order to impose a toxic industry in a World Heritage Area.

During these months, we met a lot of inspiring people and got heaps of interesting footage of this new-forming movement, which seems to combine so many groups and organizations and may cause a major shift within Japanese politics and society. "AQUI VALE TUDO": WORKS IN PROGRESS..

August, 2011. I was playing tennis in my university with a few friends. By chance, there was another guy, called Elieber. I've found out that he was a Muay Thai instructor, and also, that he knew some MMA fighters. Well, that was the real beginning of my documentary "Aqui vale tudo" (Vale Tudo is the way Brazilian people used to call the used to be "free fight" that allowed the fighter to use any kind of martial art, fighting with bare hands and each round lasted 30 minutes). 

Since then, i've been introduced to one training centre called "Quartel da luta" (translation is "fighting headquarter") and things happened in such a way that, actually, i've filmed almost in every single gym or training center in the city of Campina Grande (PB, Brazil).

In the beginning, i was wondering whether choosing a fighter or another to be the documentary's "Cicerone", that is, the key character to introduce me (and so the audience) to the whole microcosm of MMA in the city. As it often happens in documentary making, the subtle boundary between planned events and sudden, unplanned situations, tended to the second one, and if you see what i mean, it's the unpredictable. 

I knew there were strong guys around here, i already knew there were good fighters like Paredão (Big Wall), Antonio "Pezão" da Silva (Big Foot, UFC fighter), Valderi Silva (he already taught me some basic boxing, a few years ago), just to mention a few.

Nevertheless, i couldn't imagine that Campina Grande, years ago, had produced one of the world's all time greatest fighter, a man called Ivan Gomes. Actually, Brazilian magazine "Tatame", dedicated a full cover to Master Ivan, and also some 6 to 7 pages in its September 2002 edition. Interesting fact, the whole material was provided by Ms Clea Cordeiro, Ivan's widow (actually she told me they weren't officially married, but still, she had been his woman for 25 years). I had the honour to meet Ms Clea two weeks ago, she was very kind, accepted to partecipate in my documentary and she's got lots of good material, including old radio footage about the chronicle/coverage of Ivan' s first fights in Campina Grande, and also pictures, Ivan's kimonos and other sports wear she personally sewn for him.

Since my last post i've also shot a few more hours of material, including training, speeches, and much more.

Evilasio Silva Araújo (Puma), an international MMA fighter that recently fighted against Ryan Thomas (UFC), Kelles Santos (who's now living in Rio de Janeiro, fighting for TFT), Stenio Barbosa (Kelles' pupil, actually, a young fighter from Campina Grande), and many more.

Last Sunday i've shot a good part in a rehabilitation clinic called "Care", as former (three times) Cage Rage (World) Champion Jean "White Bear" Silva, use to make donations to the no-profit organization. He already gave them a cow, and the ex-drug addicted are literally crazy for her and the lamb (they're Christians, but for them, the cow is more sacred than to Indian Hinduists!). The stories i've been told that day are all similar: years spent losing one's life with drugs like crack, cocaine, meta-amphetamines, and then, like a ray of light, something made these guys entering the world of martial arts and also, they've reconciliated themselves with religion, mainly Christianism. The receipt of a hard training, discipline, respect and self-control plus a strong faith in God, "made the impossible achievable" and some guys with a drug background of about 20 years, today are supervisors at "Care". They admit that not every addicted that enter the place to be submitted to a six months treatment in the lovely Paraiba's countryside achieve to get rid of the 'daemon' of drug-addiction. Still, Sunday there was such a joy in the air, you could just feel it, as a guy was finishing his treatment, that i've been told is quite a tough matter.

   

Many stories, many fighters, but what i want to underline, beginning with the title is that "AQUI VALE TUDO" (there' s not a significant translation and i'm still thinking about the English title of my film: in Portuguese "aqui vale tudo" literally means that "here everything is allowed", but  please remember that VALE TUDO is the way Brazilians call "free fight"), that is, Campina Grande has a great fighting tradition, beginning with Ivan Gomes (more than 200 fights, all victories and only 6 draws/ties, one of these with one of the sons of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu funder, Master Helio Gracie, Carlson) and continuing with fighters like Edson Paredão, Antônio Pezão (Big Foot), Evilasio Puma, Toninho Furia, Valderi Silva, Kelles Santos, João Paulo Santos, Isac Almeida, Fabio Sapo, Rodrigo Silva Araujo (Digão), Stenio Barbosa, Rogério Souza, Thiago Macedo (Ceará), Rodrigo Mumbuca, Washington, just to mention a few. 

Campina has also good Professors like Valderi, Sensei Fialho (he's the Judo Sensei who discovered Brazilian Olimpic "judoca" Ednanci), Vanderlan Targino (i've shot a good sequence with him visiting the tough neighbourhood where he grew up, including the school's backyard where every week the kids fighted one another to establish 'who was who!'), Ely Vanderlei (Antonio "Big Foot"' first professor), between others. 

 

From real fighters to amateurs...it' s one month that i'm training with Elieber, actually, my Muay Thai Professor...yes, the guy through whom i've had the chance to meet all these fighters, and make this documentary, that already counts with 30 hours of footage.

That is, for the first time in my life i can say i'm making a documentary using the method/technique of 'observational participation', known by Anthropologists who deal with quality research inherent to the ethnographic field work.

I'm 35 years old and i'm not (so) crazy to think about becoming a pro fighter at my age!!!!!!!!!!!My weekly training does not reach a pro fighter's daily routine. Still, it's very good to "feel the vibe" by the inside!!!And as every martial artist perfectly know, since i'm training Muay Thai with Elieber i'm much calmer and at the same time, concentrated in every aspect of my life.

Finally, Stenio asked me to make a third trailer (i've already posted a teaser:http://youtu.be/szIfSAsbJmE and an 8 minutes trailer: http://youtu.be/xbksJFw9JGU), i don't know if i will, first because i've got no time right now, second because i don't want to reveal the whole material in a sequence of one thousand trailers!!!!! Anyway, in case i'll change my mind i'll post it on this blog. 

I'm planning to begin the edition of "Aqui vale tudo" (everything suggests it will be a medium lenght or even a feature documentary) in June, when i'll finish my BA in Social Sciences, and i'll be a little bit less busy (i'd say that instead of "more free", as i've got a 3 years old son, four dogs, two occupations, this documentary to conclude, academic articles to write and... a wife...ex-wife...wife...ex-wife...wife...ex-wife...that's the way my relationship with Mrs Liliana Dias Migliore goes on...or went on!!!!!). 

I've got no time, right now, to check my mistakes (in English), so i kindly ask the reader to understand me and to forgive me. I'll soon check this text and make all the corrections required.  

I'll soon post more pictures. Peace everybody, i'll conclude by mentioning my friend, Professor Targino, as he said, during an interview that will be included in this documentary: "We all spend 75% of our life  fighting against ourselves". Well, martial arts help us to know ourselves in a better and a deeper way and, above all, to regulate this inner fight, that at least, earns some rules and (self)discipline.
